Psychological treatment services for people with mental illness living in residential aged care facilities

Primary Health Tasmania has opened a tender for psychological treatment services for people with mental illness who are living in residential aged care facilities.

The new services are funded by the Australian Government for people with mild to moderate illness, and aim to give residents access to similar services as those currently available in the community.

It’s anticipated mental health professionals such as psychologists, social workers and mental health nurses will deliver psychological care to residents, who will generally require a referral beforehand, with the new services intended to complement the personal care, accommodation, physical and social support residents already receive from their facility.

In the lead up to the tender opening on 11 April 2019 we consulted residential aged care facilities, residents and other stakeholders across the state to help shape the new services.

This type of program will be new to many residential aged care facilities. With that in mind, it is anticipated its reach will expand over time, with commissioned services expected to be gradually introduced from July this year.
